Wisdom Teeth Extractions

We are here to discuss the importance of Wisdom teeth extractions.

About

Wisdom teeth removal, also known as third molar extraction, is a routine dental procedure designed to address issues associated with the eruption of wisdom teeth, which are the third set of molars that typically emerge in the late teenage years or early adulthood. While some individuals may experience no complications with their wisdom teeth, others may encounter problems due to insufficient space for proper growth, leading to pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth.

The Procedure

The procedure for wisdom teeth removal begins with a comprehensive evaluation by our oral surgeon, Dr. Karl Cuddy to assess the positioning and condition of the wisdom teeth. If extraction is deemed necessary, the patient will be scheduled for the procedure, which is typically performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable during treatment. This will help you relax and alleviate any anxiety or discomfort.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the oral surgeon will utilize specialized tools to carefully extract the wisdom teeth from the jawbone. Depending on the complexity of the extraction and the number of teeth being removed, the procedure may vary in duration. Throughout the process, our dental team will prioritize patient comfort and safety, employing precise techniques to minimize trauma and ensure optimal outcomes.

Following the extraction, patients are provided with detailed post-operative instructions to promote healing and minimize the risk of complications. These instructions typically include guidelines for caring for the extraction site, such as avoiding vigorous rinsing or touching the area with fingers or tongue. Additionally, patients will be advised to follow a soft diet and refrain from smoking or using straws, as these activities can impede the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

To manage any discomfort or swelling associated with the extraction, patients may be prescribed pain medication and instructed to apply ice packs to the affected area. It is essential for patients to adhere to these recommendations to have a  smooth healing and recovery.

In some instances, a follow-up appointment may be scheduled to monitor the healing progress and address any concerns or complications that may arise. During this visit, our Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Karl Cuddy will assess the extraction site, remove any sutures if necessary, and ensure that the patient’s recovery is progressing as expected.
